The 2021 Call for Code Global Challenge is a multiyear initiative that started in 2018, to rally developers, data scientists, technologists and problem solvers to use their skills and mastery of the latest technologies to drive positive change across the world. It is probably the largest tech for good initiative of its kind in the world.

Quite often, I get questions from leaders and team managers from various organizations about why our developer and technology teams should participate? I have tried to put together some top reasons why an organization should encourage their developer and technology teams to participate this unique challenge.

Through the Call for Code initiative, organizations and their teams have the opportunity to build and contribute to sustainable, open-source technology projects that address social and humanitarian issues. This challenge would allow participants to:

  • Etch their code on a transformative solution that effectively combats climate change
  • Work on challenges aligned to UN Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger, Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, and Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, thereby helping the organization add this initiative to their SDG programmes
  • Improve employee engagement and build their skills on industry-leading, open hybrid cloud technologies
  • Meet and collaborate with tech developers from around the world
  • Working under constraints, such as time constraints in hackathon, helps generate innovation [1]
  • Opportunity to win $200,000 USD grand prize. 1st and 2nd runner up prize of $25,000 USD, 3rd and 4th runner up prize of $10,000 USD
  • Winners will get open-source support from The Linux Foundation
  • Meetings with mentors and potential investors on winning the challenge
  • Winning solution implementation support through Code and Response, an IBM deployment initiative
  • Travel* to the Call for Code Global Award Announcement

Above all these top reasons, developers want to make a difference in their communities beyond their paid job. They want to learn about new technologies and satisfy their needs to make an impact on their environment. That perhaps is a strong reason why we witnessed almost 400,000+ developers in the community have contributed with over 15,000 applications from 179 nations.

There is no planet B.

Submissions for the challenge will open on April 22, 2021. Closes July 31, 2021. Winners will be announced in November, 2021.
